A tidy anti-aircraft survival game that is mostly about priorities: bombs, planes or the next supply drop? Simple controls hide a surprising number of decisions.

What is Tank Defender?

Command a super tank and defend your territory from planes and atomic bombs.

Tank Defender puts you in charge of a single super tank defending its territory from the air. Enemy aircraft fly overhead and drop bombs — including atomic bombs — and your job is to shoot them down before they destroy you. It is an anti-aircraft survival game: the longer you hold out, the higher your score.

You are not entirely alone. Friendly cargo planes fly over from time to time and drop supply boxes by parachute. Catching them gives you extra rockets, double rockets, shields, extra lives, bonus points or more time, and making the most of those drops is essential for a long run.

How the shooting works

Enemy planes cross the sky at different heights and speeds, dropping bombs as they go. You fire rockets upward to bring down planes and to destroy bombs before they land. Your rocket supply is limited, so you need to balance shooting threats with keeping enough ammunition in reserve.

Supply boxes from friendly planes float down slowly on parachutes. Collecting them restocks rockets or grants bonuses such as a shield, extra life or doubled rockets. The game ends when your tank runs out of lives, and your score is compared with your best.

Controls

  • ▸Move the tank left and right along the ground.
  • ▸Aim and fire rockets at enemy planes and falling bombs.
  • ▸Drive under parachute drops to collect supplies.

Your first five minutes

  1. Drive left and right to get a feel for the tank's speed.
  2. Shoot down the first few planes and note how many rockets you have left.
  3. Destroy bombs that are falling directly towards you.
  4. Watch for parachute drops and move under them.
  5. Use any shield or double-rocket bonus to push through busy moments.

Tactics and target priority

Bombs before planes

A plane that has already dropped its bomb is less urgent than the bomb itself. When something is falling towards your tank, deal with it first — either by shooting it or by driving out of the way.

Never miss a supply drop

Supply boxes are your lifeline. Rockets run out quickly in busy moments, and extra lives and shields can save a run. Position yourself under drops early, because they fall slowly and are easy to reach if you plan ahead.

Do not waste rockets

Firing constantly empties your stock. Wait until a plane is in a good position, then fire. Saving rockets for dangerous moments matters more than shooting every plane you see.

Quick tips

  • ★Destroy falling bombs before chasing planes.
  • ★Catch every parachute drop you can.
  • ★Use double rockets during the busiest moments.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✕Ignoring bombs while focusing on planes.
  • ✕Letting supply drops land out of reach.
  • ✕Emptying your rockets on easy targets.

Deep dive

A balancing act

Tank Defender is all about balance: attacking the planes, defending against bombs and collecting supplies, all with a single tank. Each of those jobs pulls you to a different part of the screen, so deciding where to be at any moment is the real skill.

Making bonuses count

Bonuses such as the shield or doubled rockets are most valuable when the sky is busiest. If you can, time your collection of supply boxes so that you have those advantages when the pressure peaks.

Who it suits

Tank Defender suits players who like simple controls with plenty of decisions. Rounds can be short or long depending on your skill, and the clear goal — survive as long as possible — makes it easy to pick up.

How Tank Defender compares

Tank Defender and Tank Wars are the two tank games on GAME SPACE, but they play very differently. Tank Wars is a top-down maze battle against enemy tanks, while Tank Defender is an anti-aircraft survival game against planes and bombs.

If you enjoy shooting at the sky, Space Purge has you defending Earth from asteroids, and Air Combat lets you fly the plane yourself.
