What is Air Combat?
Fly, fight and manage fuel and ammunition in a classic aerial shooter.
Air Combat is an arcade flying shooter. You steer a fighter plane with a virtual joystick while enemy aircraft attack from all sides. Your plane carries bullets and rockets, and its fuel slowly runs down, so staying in the air is as important as winning dogfights.
Supplies appear during the battle: extra ammunition, extra rockets, fuel and lives. Collecting them keeps your plane in the fight. Your score grows with every enemy you shoot down, and the goal is to stay alive long enough to set a new high score.
How the shooting works
Enemy planes enter the screen and attack. You fly around to line up shots while avoiding collisions and enemy fire. Bullets are your main weapon; rockets are more powerful but limited.
Your fuel and ammunition bars drain as you play. Pickups for fuel, bullets, rockets and lives appear during the fight, and collecting them is essential for a long game. When you run out of lives, your score is compared with your best.
Controls
- ▸Use the on-screen joystick or drag to steer the plane.
- ▸Fire bullets and rockets at enemy aircraft.
- ▸Fly into supply pickups to collect them.
Your first five minutes
- Practise steering with the joystick before engaging enemies.
- Shoot down the first enemies with your bullets.
- Save rockets for tougher moments.
- Watch the fuel bar and collect fuel pickups.
- Grab ammunition before your bars run empty.
Tactics and target priority
Fuel is life
Running out of fuel ends your flight just as surely as enemy fire. Make fuel pickups a priority whenever your bar drops below half.
Save rockets
Rockets are powerful but limited. Use bullets for routine targets and keep rockets for groups of enemies or dangerous moments.
Keep moving
A plane flying in a straight line is easy to hit. Gentle, continuous movement makes you much harder to target.
Quick tips
- ★Collect fuel before it runs low.
- ★Use bullets first, rockets second.
- ★Stay away from the edges of the screen.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Ignoring the fuel bar.
- ✕Using all rockets early.
- ✕Flying straight into enemy formations.
Deep dive
Three resources to manage
Air Combat asks you to juggle fuel, bullets and rockets as well as lives. That turns a simple shooter into a game of priorities: should you chase that fuel pickup or finish off the plane in front of you?
Joystick control
The virtual joystick works well on touch screens and with a mouse. Small movements give the most control; large movements are useful for dodging but can carry you into trouble.
Who it suits
Air Combat suits fans of classic arcade shooters who enjoy a bit of resource management on top of the action.
Using the joystick
Small movements of the virtual joystick give fine control. Push further for faster movement when dodging.
Planning your flight
Air Combat rewards forward planning. Keep an eye on all your bars — fuel, bullets and rockets — and head for the matching pickup before any of them run dry. Staying near the middle of the screen gives you room to dodge in any direction, and gentle, continuous movement keeps you out of enemy fire.
Who Air Combat suits
Air Combat suits fans of classic arcade shooters who enjoy managing fuel and ammunition as well as dogfighting. Its simple joystick controls make it easy to pick up on both desktop and mobile.
How Air Combat compares
Air Combat and Space Purge are the two flying shooters on GAME SPACE. Air Combat is a dogfight with fuel and ammunition to manage; Space Purge is about protecting the Earth from asteroids across ten levels.
If you enjoy anti-aircraft action from the other side, Tank Defender puts you on the ground shooting at planes.
