What is Speed Racer?
Top-down lap racing for one player — or two on the same device.
Speed Racer is a top-down lap racing game. Your car races around a track lined with trees and light poles, and every completed lap is counted. Dirt, tyre marks and crashes add drama as you push for the best time.
The game supports both a one-player mode and a two-player mode on the same device, each with its own car and speed display. That makes it a great choice for quick head-to-head races with a friend or family member sitting next to you.
What the driving is like
Each race takes place on a looping track. You steer around corners, avoid crashing and cross the lap line as many times as you can. Your speed is shown on screen, and crashes slow you down.
In two-player mode, both cars share the track, each with its own controls and speed display. Whoever drives more cleanly and quickly comes out on top. Your best score is saved.
Controls
- ▸Choose one-player or two-player mode from the menu.
- ▸Steer your car using the on-screen controls or keyboard.
- ▸Keep your car on the road and cross the lap line to complete laps.
Your first drive
- Start a one-player race to learn the controls.
- Drive slowly around the first lap to learn the corners.
- Increase your speed on straight sections.
- Avoid crashing into the scenery.
- Invite a friend to try two-player mode.
Driving technique
Smooth steering
Sharp steering often leads to crashes. Turn in early and steer smoothly through corners.
Learn the track
Knowing where the corners are lets you prepare in advance rather than reacting at the last moment.
Avoid crashes
Crashing costs far more time than slowing down slightly. A clean lap is a fast lap.
Quick tips
- ★Turn in early for corners.
- ★Speed up on straights.
- ★Clean laps beat risky ones.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Steering too sharply.
- ✕Ignoring upcoming corners.
- ✕Driving too fast to stay on the road.
Deep dive
Two players, one screen
The two-player mode is Speed Racer's standout feature. Racing a friend on the same device is a classic arcade experience and a great way to share a game.
Top-down racing
The top-down view lets you see the track layout clearly, which makes planning corners easier than in first-person racing.
Who it suits
Speed Racer suits families and friends looking for a quick, competitive game, as well as solo players chasing a better score.
Getting the most from two-player mode
In two-player mode, each player has their own car and speed display, and both race on the same track. Sit side by side with the device between you. Agree on a number of laps and keep a running score across several races. Clean driving usually beats aggressive driving, because crashes cost a lot of time.
Improving your solo times
In one-player mode, focus on smooth lines through each corner. Notice where you tend to crash and slow down slightly before those points. Your best score is saved, so you can track your progress.
Practice routine
Drive a few slow laps to learn the track, then gradually increase your speed while keeping laps clean.
Racing etiquette for two players
When playing two-player races, agree on the number of laps before you start and keep a tally over several races rather than judging by a single result. Swapping which car each person drives keeps things fair. Most importantly, keep it friendly: Speed Racer is at its best as a light-hearted contest shared side by side.
How Speed Racer compares
Speed Racer is the only lap racer on GAME SPACE. Car Physics is a physics-based hill-climbing challenge, and Zombie Uprising is a driving game where you crush zombies on the road.
If you enjoy two-player games, Super Goal also supports playing against a friend.
