Viking Escape review
7.0/10
By the GAME SPACE editorial team · Updated October 3, 2026 · How we rate games
Why these scores
Eight named enemy types, several weapons and pickups give it plenty of variety.
Moving and attacking at once, with many projectiles on screen, takes some practice.
The varied enemies make each run different.
Fantasy combat with hit effects is better suited to older children.
Our take
A lively fantasy shooter with a great premise — a Viking on a dragon — and the widest enemy roster on the site. It is busy and occasionally chaotic, but the variety of goblins keeps every run different.
What we like
- +Large, varied cast of enemies
- +Several weapon types with different effects
- +Strong sense of atmosphere
What could be better
- −Lots of enemies and projectiles at once — a larger screen helps
- −Hit effects make it less suitable for young children
What is Viking Escape?
Ride a dragon through a goblin-infested forest, throwing weapons and breathing fire.
Viking Escape is a side-scrolling action shooter. In the game's own words, you control a Viking flying on a dragon, and the Viking must find his way out of a dark forest filled with goblins and other mutants. The Viking throws different types of weapons while the dragon breathes fiery flames.
The forest is packed with enemies, each with its own behaviour: goblin warriors, archers, bombers, cyclopes, shamans, hog riders, flying enemies and evil plants. Collect coins, jewels, bonus boxes and extra lives as you fly, and survive long enough to escape with as many points and as much ammunition as possible.
How the action plays out
The forest scrolls past as you fly. Enemies appear on the ground and in the air, attacking with arrows, bombs, magic and melee. You dodge their attacks and strike back with thrown weapons — there are several ammunition types, each with its own effect, including fire and electricity. Hazards such as spikes and maces add to the danger.
The game tracks distance travelled, time and score. Collecting coins and jewels boosts your score, while bonus boxes provide extra ammunition and lives. If the Viking loses all his life, the run ends and your total score is shown.
Controls
- ▸Move the Viking and dragon with the on-screen or keyboard controls.

How to survive longer
Learn the enemy types
Each goblin type attacks differently. Archers fire from a distance, bombers drop explosives and cyclopes are tough. The info screen introduces them; learning their behaviour lets you deal with the most dangerous ones first.
Manage your ammunition
Weapons are limited, and different types do different damage. Use the stronger ammunition on tougher enemies and keep an eye out for bonus boxes to restock.
Keep moving
Staying still makes you an easy target for archers and bombers. Keep the dragon moving up and down so that projectiles miss.
Quick tips
- ★Take out archers and bombers before they can fire.
- ★Save stronger ammunition for cyclopes and other tough foes.
- ★Grab life bonuses whenever you see them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Flying in a straight line through enemy fire.
- ✕Wasting powerful weapons on weak enemies.
- ✕Ignoring bonus boxes and running out of ammunition.
Deep dive
A varied enemy roster
Viking Escape stands out for its variety of enemies. Goblin warriors, archers, bombers, cyclopes, shamans, hog riders, flying enemies and carnivorous plants all require slightly different handling. That variety keeps each run interesting and rewards players who learn how each enemy behaves.
Weapons and effects
Several ammunition types are available, with fire and electric effects among them. Experimenting with each weapon type helps you understand which ones are most efficient against which enemies.
Content note
Viking Escape is a fantasy action game with cartoon combat and brief hit effects. It is not realistic, but younger children may prefer gentler games.
How Viking Escape compares
Viking Escape and Ranger vs Zombies are the two side-scrolling action shooters on GAME SPACE. Viking Escape has you flying on a dragon through a fantasy forest, while Ranger vs Zombies is a platform shooter on foot with magic skills.
If you prefer runners with lighter combat, Super Cowboy Run combines running with shooting. For a calmer flying game, try Air Combat or Space Purge.
