What is Brick Out?

Bounce the ball, smash the bricks and grab power-ups across 20 levels.

Brick Out is a classic brick-breaking arcade game. You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen and bounce a ball upward into a wall of bricks. Each brick the ball hits breaks apart, and clearing every brick completes the level. There are 20 levels, each with its own brick layout.

Broken bricks sometimes release power-ups that change the game: extra balls, a fireball that smashes through bricks, cannons on your paddle, a barrier that stops the ball falling, a wider or narrower paddle, a faster ball, bonus time, extra lives and score bonuses. Iron blocks and bombs add extra twists.

How the action plays out

The ball bounces off walls, bricks and your paddle. Where the ball hits the paddle determines the angle it travels at, so your positioning controls its direction. If the ball falls past the paddle, you lose a life. Losing all your lives ends the game.

As bricks break, power-ups drop. Some help, such as an extra ball or a wider paddle; others make things harder, such as a smaller paddle or a faster ball. Clearing all the bricks moves you to the next level, and your score carries through to a total at the end.

Controls

  • ▸Move the paddle left and right with the mouse or by dragging.
  • ▸Launch the ball at the start of each life.
  • ▸Catch falling power-ups with the paddle.

Your first run

  1. Launch the ball and practise keeping it in play.
  2. Notice how hitting the ball with the edge of the paddle changes its angle.
  3. Catch the first power-up and see what it does.
  4. Aim the ball at gaps to get it behind the bricks.
  5. Clear the level and move on to the next layout.

How to survive longer

Use the paddle edges

Hitting the ball near the edge of the paddle sends it off at a sharp angle, while the middle sends it more straight up. Use this to aim the ball at specific bricks or to send it into gaps.

Get behind the wall

If you can get the ball into the space above the bricks, it will bounce around and break many bricks without you having to do anything. Aim for gaps at the sides of the brick wall.

Choose your power-ups

Not every power-up is helpful. Catch the extra balls, wider paddle and fireball; avoid the smaller paddle and speed-up if you are struggling to keep up.

Quick tips

  • ★Keep your eye on the ball, not the bricks.
  • ★Catch extra balls for faster clearing.
  • ★Avoid power-ups that make the paddle smaller.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✕Chasing power-ups and losing the ball.
  • ✕Always hitting the ball with the centre of the paddle.
  • ✕Catching every power-up without checking what it is.

Deep dive

A timeless arcade idea

Brick-breaking games have been popular for decades because they are instantly understandable but surprisingly skilful. Controlling the ball's angle with your paddle position turns a simple bounce into a game of aim and planning.

Power-ups add variety

Brick Out has a long list of power-ups, from cannons and fireballs to barriers and cloned balls. They make each level play differently and create exciting moments when several balls are bouncing at once.

Who it suits

Brick Out suits players of all ages. It is non-violent, easy to learn and works well for both quick breaks and longer sessions working through all 20 levels.

How Brick Out compares

Brick Out is the only brick-breaking game on GAME SPACE. Its closest relatives are other games about controlling a bouncing ball: Touch Ball and Flappy Ball.

If you enjoy clearing a board piece by piece, the Match-3 section and Bubble Professor offer a puzzle-based version of the same satisfaction.
